Background
Oxidation resistance 1 (OXR1) protein is a cellular oxidative stress sensor that regulates expression of signaling proteins involved in cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. Depletion of OXR1 plays a role in oxidative stress associated with neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's disease, diabetic retinopathy, hyperoxia induced retinopathy, and neuronal damage. OXR1 also plays a role in cell cycle arrest in response to DNA damage, and is upregulated in cells undergoing senescence. OXR1 is a target of the senolytic agent, piperlongumine, and its analogues.
