Naked mole-rats (NMRs, Heterocephalus glaber) are the longest-lived rodents despite their small body mass (~ 32 g). Their maximum lifespan is over 30 years. This is ten times longer than that of mice and five times longer than expected based on body mass. Phenotypic aging appears to be virtually absent for 80% of their lifespan, including sarcopenia, neurodegeneration, disease, and cancer. Based on sustained fecundity and an age-independent mortality rate, some authors even suggest that the naked mole-rat is the first known example of a non-aging mammal.
