| Product Overview | Telomeres, consisting of repetitive nucleotide sequences, reside at the ends of chromosomes and serve as protective caps, shielding chromosomes from degradation and genetic information loss. In the natural course of cell division, normal diploid cells undergo telomere shortening with each cycle, leading to a gradual reduction in telomere length. This decline in telomere length has been associated with the potential to predict an organism's lifespan. Accurate and consistent quantification of telomere length is crucial in various facets of cell biology, including the study of chromosomal stability, DNA repair mechanisms, senescence (cellular aging), apoptosis (programmed cell death), cell dysfunctions, and the development of cancer. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), a circular and multicopy genome, is located within the mitochondria, an essential cellular organelle responsible for energy production. The cell's capacity for energy production relies on both the integrity and copy number of mtDNA. There is evidence indicating a positive correlation between telomere length and mitochondrial dysfunction in the context of cellular aging and various age-related disorders, such as cancer, diabetes, and neurodegenerative diseases. A potential mechanistic link between these phenomena has been proposed, involving the PPAR signaling pathway. However, the precise details of this mechanism are still under investigation and require further elucidation. |
